In a world of precarity and corruption, it’s easy to focus on what’s wrong.
After all, nonprofit professionals have to know what they’re up against.
But there IS such a thing as too much.
One rising star in public policy told me that scouring news headlines daily to be more informed at work resulted in hours of lost sleep every night. Looking back, my friend realized those extra hours hadn’t led to more effective work—but they HAD taken a toll. Striking the right balance is key.
When you want to change the world…
Focus on what you DO want, not on what you DON’T want.
How?
Take time to appreciate good in the world, despite the bad.
IN FIVE MINUTES, YOU CAN CHANGE YOUR OUTLOOK…
Simply by remembering the good and expressing gratitude.
Here’s how:
- Grab a pen and notepad.
- Set a five-minute timer.
- Write down as many things as you can think of that you are genuinely grateful for.
Many people will start this list with their loved ones, friends, or pets. But gratitude isn’t exclusive to the MOST important figures in our lives. When you think about it, you might discover you’re grateful for many things: Your shoes, your desk, a cup of coffee, electricity.
And these things are around you every day, even when the word feels hostile.
There’s love and good fortune to be found in the world, in YOUR world, daily.
Remembering that gives you the strength to face all the rest.
