COVID and wildfires destroyed the life I built in California and left me picking up the pieces in the Midwest.

A few years later, a golden opportunity arrived. With a dream job offer on the horizon, I piled into a 34-foot RV with two friends and their four animals (two cats and two dogs). It was a chance to go back where I belonged—and we never imagined three working adults would struggle through closing on a house. The process (meant to take 30 days) stretched on for months.

As the Pacific Northwest winter bore down on us, there were days when I didn’t know where my next meal was coming from. A hack against U.S. title companies added weeks to our timeline, and the coldest Christmas of my life passed in a barely adequate shelter. It opened my eyes to just how many people are in need all around us.
